Disrespect not very becoming

Insight for your “Journey across the Sky”
A View from the Nest www.eagleviews.org
“A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the Lord of hosts Mal 1:6 (NKJV)

Pay everyone whatever you owe them. If you owe taxes, pay them. If you owe tolls, pay them. If you owe someone respect, respect that person. If you owe someone honor, honor that person. Romans 13:7 (GW)

I’m sure you’ve seen an insect such as a fly struggling desperately to escape to the outside world through a closed window. He never gives up. His frenzied effort would be almost funny if it weren’t a life and death struggle. He backs off. flies into the glass head on, Crashes. backs off, flies into the glass head on again, and again, and again. He totally exhausts himself and drops dead on the windowsill. Little did he know he was doomed from the start.

Human nature is much like that common housefly. We have a tendency to want to rage against God constantly, while our lives are spinning out of control. We continue to raise our fists toward heaven and dare God to make His presence known, while not having a clue as to what a powerful force we are dealing with. I mean would you purposely enter into a lion’s cage and pick a fight with a hungry lion and have no protection from when that lion decides to attack? I mean if that lion wanted too, just one gulp would be all it would take to end your battle against him.

Knowing the nature of a lion, we are not quick to pick a fight with one. I guess we reason because God has not been quick to show retaliation we can hurl insults at Him unabated. Because God chooses to be long suffering toward insolent people he is much maligned. We stand and shake our fists at Him believing he is either not there, asleep at the wheel, non-caring or some other foolish notion.

Let’s take a look at a few of these arguments. If God does not exist then what is the use of shaking your fist at him? Is it because your own life is so out of control you have to blame someone or something for it? So you pick a non-existent deity to blame for your failures? If not, you really look foolish blaming someone who does not exist for your problems. Your problems obviously would be a result of your own decisions.

Pop Goes the Gospel- June 30 2008

Welcome to the June 30, 2008 edition of pop goes the gospel. I wish to thank everyone who participated in this inaugural edition of Pop Goes the Gospel. If you intended to submit an article for this blog carnival but time just got away from you make sure you do not miss our next edition scheduled for July 30 2008. Submit your articles early to be sure you get them in before the deadline.

Now on with the carnival:

simplyeddie presents The Question Not Asked posted at Simple Life In Christ, Is doing a fine job with this blog there were several articles I would have liked to have seen submitted to this blog carnival but The Question Not Asked is a good one.  Reflecting on the freedom Christ brings to a life bound by sin is truly inspiring.

Michael Snyder presents The Los Lunas Decalogue Stone – How In The World Did The Ten Commandments Get To America Before Columbus Did? posted at Shattered Paradigm.

Very interesting story postulating the thought that perhaps the Phoenicians traveled to North American long before Columbus made the trip.

in Church Life

Kathleen Gage presents Tithing – Fact or Fiction? posted at Daily Awareness, saying, “If you subscribe to virtually any religious or spiritual belief you’ve likely heard about tithing. Whether or not you are actually tithing is another thing.Tithing can be a very emotionally charged activity. It has been said that what you put out your receive back tenfold. Is this true or is it simply a way for a church or spiritual group to strong arm followers to give up their money? Some people believe wholeheartedly in the spiritual practice of tithing while others view it as manipulation.

Find out if tithing blesses or hinders.”

in Culture

Julie Heath – More4kids Inc. presents Living Green – Dominion and Stewardship of God’s Creation posted at More4kids. Julie tackles the environmental issue with scripture. Be sure to check it out.

Crystal Nichols presents You are blessed. Now act like it! posted at Christian in the Corporate World. A gentle kick in the conscience about being thankful for all we have been blessed with as a nation and as a people. Crystal reminds us of the pitfalls of covetousness with the analogy of King David and Bathsheba.

Michael Snyder presents The Picture Of The Hindu God That Barack Obama Carries For Good Luck posted at Shattered Paradigm. Michael addresses the “hidden things” by looking at a Hindu god good luck charm that Barack Obama carries around with him. I wonder how many “secret things” we carry around in our hearts that would make God point a finger and say: “What’s up with that?” This article should make us all think and remember that God said everything hidden will be uncovered and be sure your secret sins will find you out. You can keep nothing secret from God.

in our media department

Allen in Fort Worth presents Can The Whos Hear Horton? posted at The Whited Sepulchre, saying, “here’s a parable from Dr. Seuss.” I loved the movie and enjoyed Allen’s post. Dr. Seuss was a childhood favorite and I guess some things just stick with you into adulthood. Nice job Allen.

My own submission for this carnival is: Is there a doctor in the “House”?

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of pop goes the gospel using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

Wreaking havoc on America

Matt Friedeman – Guest Columnist –
On occasion I find articles written that reinforce the philosophy of this blog and I like to share those articles with you. This is one such article. Be sure to check out his webpage at www.InTheFight.com.

Matt Friedeman

There are four “modern horsemen of the apocalypse,” according to Dr. Richard Land in remarks delivered to the annual Southern Baptist Convention in Indianapolis, and they are “riding forth to wreak havoc and destruction in our society.” Land listed the four as the denial of the sanctity of human life, the rise of hardcore Internet pornography, the radical homosexual agenda and the attempt to undermine marriage, and radical Islamic jihadism.

Scary enough list.  Here’s an even scarier one:

• The inactive, rudderless Church
• Fatherlessness
• Undisciplined prosperity
• The values of popular culture
Let’s take these in reverse order:

The values of popular culture

Popular culture comes to us in many ways, most of them with the unfettered approval of evangelical Christians.  We of the faith watch just as much television as the secular world.  We allow our kids to view MTV just as much, R-rated movies to the same extent, listen to hip-hop and secular rock music, and are just as open to the lowest common denominators in Internet and computer games.

Through these technological media our children, our teens, and none-too-few adults learn the majority of their life lessons about sex, drug use, violence, family, materialism, and peer relationships.  And the lessons are hardly reflective of Judeo-Christian tradition, which receives much less of our time and attention on a daily basis.  Small example — the average television viewing per home is seven hours a day … more American households have televisions than indoor plumbing … the average American preschooler watches an average of four hours of television daily.

Care to guess how much the average household spends in private or family devotions, or how much daily conversation actually passes between parent and teen?

Undisciplined prosperity

Undisciplined prosperity and the development of Mammonites is a curse to any generation.  It is an easy thing to get wrapped up in the pursuit of happiness and to forget that the pursuit of holiness ought to trump the former.  Money, possessions, and comforts tend to fuzz up the clear thinking of a culture until the stern virtues of hard work, frugality, integrity, sacrifice, self-denial, and biblical righteousness — the things that led to the foundation of our prosperity — are shoved to life’s periphery.  The prophets and teachers of Scripture knew this, which is why the Bible talks four to five times as much about money as it does about the vitally imperative topics of prayer or faith.  Undisciplined prosperity that makes “self” the focus instead of God and others becomes the millstone around the neck of a once moral people.

Undisciplined prosperity tends to make a people sloppy, selfish and arrogant.  And it is an age-old problem, as can be seen from this description of Sodom’s sin in Ezekiel 16:49:

Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

Part of this sloppiness becomes the sense of entitlement — the attitude that even if I can’t afford it, I will get it.  Call it debt — whether through personal credit cards or government borrowing.  Debt is no friend to society and, left unchecked, an ultimately lethal enemy. Wisdom Wednesday: Jesus is Passe

“He’s passé. Nobody cares about Mickey anymore. There
are whole batches of Mickeys we just can’t give away.
I think we should phase him out.” — Roy Disney, Walt
Disney’s brother, 1937

Having first of all the knowledge that in the last days there will be men who, ruled by their evil desires, will make sport of holy things, Saying, Where is the hope of his coming? From the death of the fathers till now everything has gone on as it was from the making of the world. 2 Peter 3:3-4 (BBE)

Like many funny animal characters, Mickey Mouse wears clothes, stands on two legs, has prehensile hands, and talks

Image via Wikipedia

Three theme parks and billions of dollars later it would appear that Mickey the Mouse is more popular today than in 1937. Billions have heard and seen at least one Mickey Mouse cartoon in their life time and many have purchased Disney Licensed merchandise.

Had Walt Disney given up on the idea of Mickey Mouse like his brother suggested in 1937 than the whole Disney franchise would have been nothing more than a dream. Instead it has become one of the largest, if not the largest, entertainment conglomerates in the world.

Christianity has been under attack by scoffers and nonbelievers since Christ walked on the earth. For over 2000 years naysayers would have us believe that Jesus has lost his appeal. Scoffers say nobody cares about Jesus anymore. There are churches closing their doors each year and we can not seem to give religion away. Therefore we should just phase Jesus out of our life.

Regardless of the Roy Disneys of the world, just like Mickey, Jesus is still influencing millions of lives all over the world. Even without theme parks, although there are several in the works or already operating in the United States, Jesus is still alive and well in 2008.
