FDA Could Green Light Genetically Modified Humans

Animation of the structure of a section of DNA...

According to the Associated Press, the FDA this week will be considering whether to approve a fertilization technique that could combine the DNA from three people.

The notion is to try to end genetic diseases by splicing out “bad” genes and replacing them with good ones. via FDA Could Green Light Genetically Modified Humans.

They say that art imitates life but perhaps the reverse is true in this case. Scientists are looking at ways to splice together DNA from three individuals to produce a genetically superior offspring. I guess their attempts at cloning individuals had not worked out so well.

In the FOX sci-fi thriller “Almost Human” set in the year 2048 technology has evolved to a place where a person can replace lost body parts with fully functioning biotic limbs (think the bionic man of yesteryear.) Additionally science has attempted to produced the perfect human through genetic engineering.

In the latest episode “Beholder” a creepy, bandaged home invader has killed folks…but nobody puts the fact that they have a serial killer on their hands until he kills a “chrome,” one of the Almost Human world’s genetically perfect citizens.

“Chromes” by design don’t die of natural causes (this guy’s weapon of choice is designed to make it look like they died of natural causes), and suddenly, the case is linked to the mysterious and sudden deaths of seven other citizens. The only apparent connection? They’re all attractive.

These genetically modified chromes form a cliché and are very secretive and dismissive of any normal human infiltration. I guess you could say they are rather snobbish. But when one of them gets killed we get a behind-the-scenes look at these laboratory enhanced humans. They consider themselves to be privileged. Even science can not make decent human beings out of the self-important.

The killer was part of a test group who was being treated with an advanced form of plastic
surgery which used nanobots to do the surgery from inside and not externally. The experiment went terribly wrong and our killer finds himself with a very distorted view of himself. (His face was horribly disfigured.) The reason he goes on a killing spree is because he is harvesting facial features from his victims to reconstruct his face before he presents himself to his online girl friend who just happens to be blind.

Apart from the irony this little trip down fantasy lane may actually shed a light on the human condition. All these scientific attempts to manipulate nature, and to find a way to genetically modify life, is science’s attempt to play god and ultimately to cheat death. In the end it always turns out the same. The attempt to produce the perfect human always ends in failure. What the world needs is not more technology or biology. What the world needs is not man-made fixes to personal shortcomings. The world needs a cure for the inward disfigurements of life caused by sin. The world needs to be transformed. This life-changing transformation can not be manufactured in a laboratory, or produced by nanobots, it must be accepted as a free gift from God through Jesus Christ.

Oh yes someone had to die so that your remake could be completed, but that someone gave his life willing for you so that you could live.

Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich
person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard him asked, “Who, then, can be saved?” Jesus said, “The things that are impossible for people to do are possible for God to do.” Luke 18:25-27 (GW)

In other words you can not buy yourself a ticket to heaven. So you see art does imitate life.

No Rest for the Wicked

But the wicked are like the troubled sea, for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked. Isaiah 57:20-21 (AMP)
“I am a person who loves death. . . . I would like to be killed by the bullet.” This was the boast of Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and numerous others. His perverted wish was granted when his life recently ended with bullets to the head and chest.

Osama bin Laden is just the latest in the long list of evil persons who met with a violent end. Osama knew that his life was threatened everyday. One look at his fortified homestead gives us a glimpse into the fear this man lived with daily. Reports indicate he never went outside and rarely had visitors, there was no telephone or internet connections. Osama’s compound was surrounded by concrete security walls topped with barbed wire. He obviously felt the need to hide. What a way to live life -holed up in a walled bunker.

For someone who talked big, and acted so tough in videos and audio tapes he died a coward. Among the items American forces pulled out of the terrorist leader’s compound last week are videos of Bin Laden, wrapped in a blanket, watching himself on television. ABCNews reports, the warlord is seen to be “a vain pathetic old man.”  And what Osama wanted to see was not just himself, but a younger, improved version of himself. American forces confirm that Bin Laden was dying his beard, to manage his image in attempts to appear more vibrant to his supporters around the world.

The nature of evil, ultimately, is narcissism. And the end result of narcissism is always evil. Sometimes that evil shows up in preening and boasting. Other times it shows up in the ease with which one takes offense. Sometimes that offense even morphs into a crusade or a jihad, around the world.

Essayist David Brooks has noted that for the narcissist the self-image is “the holy center of all that is sacred and right.” “If someone treats him slightingly, he perceives that as a deliberate and heinous attack,” Brooks writes. “If someone threatens his reputation, he regards this as an act of blasphemy.”

Because of this narcissism America is supposed to walk around on egg shells in order to not provoke a jihad by offending the fragile sensibilities of Muslims. Apparently these tough jihadists have very thin skin because everything seems to offend them. Cartoons, books, newspaper articles, satirical works, art, music, well just about anything. If someone disagrees with them they threaten to blow something up. Well there is one less offense in the world Osama has been laid to rest at the bottom of the sea.

God does not take any delight in the death of the wicked but prefers a person accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior thereby making them a new creature, but to a narcissist there is no god but himself. A narcissist see’s themselves as god of all. They feel their viewpoint is the only one that matters as Brooks pointed out in his work. This puts the narcissist in conflict with God and all that is holy and right. Therefore by their own positioning they have made themselves enemies of God. Osama bin Laden lived and died by the sword, the sword of his own making, the sword of offense that he himself forged in his own hatred for God and God’s people.

A better end to this sorry story would have been if Osama would have had an encounter with Jesus and repented of all his evil ways and went about making restitution for all the evil he had wrought. But that was not to be and he now lies amongst the dead awaiting his final judgment before the very God he despised while living. Do not rejoice in the death of this wicked man but rather reflect because his sins are no greater than yours or mine. Unless we repent and accept Jesus Christ as our righteousness we too shall face the same end as Osama bin Laden because the wages of sin is death. It may not come at the hands of the Navy SEALs but death and God’s judgment are ours none-the-less.

It is far better to walk about humbly and reverently in fear of God then to think all is well and you have no need of a savior.

And that is this week’s tail feather. Think about it! What say you?

But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness. Isaiah 40:31 Open Link in New Window (BBE)

There is a Right and a Wrong Way to do Things

This weeks Scripture wallpaper is one of contrast. Contrasting light from darkness, right from wrong, life and death. Choose you this day which pathway you wish to follow. There is only one way that leads to life, but there are many roads that lead to death.

Naysayers or Yes Men

In light of the recent death of Michael Jackson I thought it was appropriate to repost an early article on the problems associated with the RICH and the FAMOUS who surround themselves with people who are not truly seeking their best interests but actually are enabling their own demise. Initial reports seem to be circulating about Michael’s misuse of prescription drugs. There is growing controversy over the cardiac doctor who was present at the time of Michael’s cardiac arrest. The events that led up to the death of Michael could possibly have been prevented had Michael chosen a road of righteousness rather than stardom. There is a way that seems right unto man but the end thereof is death. Take a lesson and learn from the misfortunes of others and perhaps we can side step the events that led to their untimely deaths.

He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm“?—Proverbs 13:20

ShipwreckThe allure of the world’s riches have caused many to fall by the wayside. The deceitfulness of riches ability to heal us of all ills has bankrupted many a soul on this journey called life. Each week we are reminded of the failings of mankind when another person finds themselves shipwrecked on the rocks of disgrace and shame.

Paris Hilton, although used to being in the spotlight for her celebrity status as an heir to the great Hilton empire, recently found out her celebrity status could not keep her from a prison cell. In fact the media frenzy that surrounds her just might have added to her misfortunes. For a person who is so used to the richness of privilege to find herself in a less than advantageous position had to be very humiliating for her. What brought Paris to this place in her life? Could something had been done to prevent this from happening?

A resounding yes would be the reply of any thinking person. Had someone stepped in to persuade her to stop her partying ways and take her life a bit more seriously perhaps she could have avoided her prison sentence.

Newspapers are filled with stories of the haves who end up face down in life’s cesspool. In just our recent past we can name many celebrities who have fallen from the heights of respect to the depths of shame. Lindsey, Brittney, Anna Nicole, O.J., Michael Jackson, “The Huff” must we go on?

Many through their hardships found a better way.

Some still live in disgrace to this day.

Sins_141cChristiandom is not void of those who had fallen from great heights into public shame and disgrace. Who can forget PTL and James and Tammy Faye? Or Jimmy Swaggart’s moral failure? All of us need to take heed and listen to what proverbs has to say about this subject. To use a modern day proverb one could say if you lie down with the dogs you are likely to get up with fleas.

Death Awaits us All

Even of those who trust in and lean on their wealth and
boast of the abundance of their riches? None of them can by any means redeem
[either himself or] his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—
For the ransom of a life is too costly, and [the price one can pay] can never suffice—
So that he should live on forever and never see the pit (the grave) and corruption.
For he sees that even wise men die; the [self-confident] fool and
the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.
Psalms 49:6-10 (AMP)

but whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:15 (NKJV)
