What Color is that Dress?

A recent cellphone snapshot of a dress went viral in the last week of February, going crazy on social media, and even being picked up by huge global news outlets like the BBC and The New York Times.

The controversy that drew in celebrities and senators, “melting the internet” was simple at first—was “the dress” blue and black, or white and gold? A simple question, but one that quickly divided the globe. (White and gold won in the polls, but the dress in question is blue and black.) Even scientists couldn’t agree on the phenomenon of vision that caused such stark visual differences. The consensus now, though is that how we perceive the color of the dress is much more related to how our minds process the “meaning” of the surrounding light—the calculations that our brains make to judge the effect that light has on color can create an optical illusion, in this case, fooling the tens of millions of people who saw the blue and black dress as white and gold.

Our viewpoints are shaped by our surroundings as well. There are opposing thoughts in our society as well. Some see things one way (black and blue) while others see things differently (white and gold). In the marketplace of ideas some issues not important when it comes to matters of life and death like the color of a dress; however there are issues that hold eternal consequences and as such it is important that you view the issue from the perspective of what is true and right.

Calling a black and blue dress white and gold does not matter unless you actually know what color the dress is and then go around telling everyone the opposite is true. Efforts to deceive others is as old as time itself, for since the foundations of the world were laid the battle for the hearts and minds of civilization has waged, with the forces of right competing with the forces of wrong. Those who see through the lens of a Christian world view are competing with those who view the world through a secular lens, and as such these two camps will often oppose each other. As Christians we are advised to walk in truth, and to speak truth in love. We are to find out what color the dress really is and then tell others the truth. We should not enter the arena of speculation nor postulate unproven theories, but rather stick to what is true and right.

So what color is the dress? Who cares? What is true and right? Now that is what really matters. Are you following those who are hell-bent on deceiving you and leading you down the path of lies and deception, or are you ever vigilant in your search for truth?

Jesus said that He was the right way, the truth and nothing but truth, and he was the light, the true light that shows exactly what color your heart is. Many saw the dress as white and gold but were later proven wrong when the dress was revealed as being actually blue and black. Just because the crowd happens to see things one way does not mean it is the right way.

Stealing from our children

2 Corinthians 12:14 (GW)

14 I’m ready to visit you for a third time, and I won’t bother you for help. I don’t want your possessions. Instead, I want you. Children shouldn’t have to provide for their parents, but parents should provide for their children.

Remember Occupy Wall Street, when thousands across the country took to the streets, sleeping in tents to protest the ultra-rich 1 percent? The occupiers’ frustration was real, but their ire was misdirected. They should have launched an Occupy the AARP movement instead.

Sometimes we need a strong, hard slap in the face by truth to awaken us from our stupor. This topic is never an easy one to discuss but address it we must. Entitlement programs have bankrupted this country and statistically speaking it is no longer fiscally possible to support these programs and they are coming to an end, unless something is done to change the trajectory.

Politicians from both sides of the aisles are not willing to debate this issue, and to be honest those on the receiving end of these entitlement programs are not willing to give them up or even entertain any real changes. This is an issue that is taboo and like religion and politics makes enemies of those on opposing sides.

Address them we must because like all other wealth transfer programs the inerrant problem they all have in common is that they rely on other people’s money for support. As the economy grows worse for those who actually are stuck footing the bill it does not take a rocket scientist to understand that as the costs to keep up these programs continues to grow and the income of those who pay for them continues to decline we are on a collision course with disaster.

Live Long And Prosper

The “Trekkies” among us are mourning the death of actor Leonard Nimoy, whose cool and logical “Spock” is an iconic television hero. The alien character was known for his loyalty, self-sacrifice (when it computed, at least), and quiet curiosity, providing a counterpoint for the rash, slightly narcissistic Captain Kirk. The character’s popularity among fans is colossal—even today. “Spock” is a more recognizable name to many than “Leonard Nimoy.”

Nimoy’s craft of method acting meant that in many ways, he lived as Spock. The New York Times quotes Nimoy, saying “To this day, I sense Vulcan speech patterns, Vulcan social attitudes and even Vulcan patterns of logic and emotional suppression in my behavior,” Mr. Nimoy wrote years after the original series ended. But that wasn’t such a bad thing, he discovered. “Given the choice,” he wrote, “if I had to be someone else, I would be Spock.”

Nimoy became Spock through a long process that left a mark. Pretending to be someone else made a lasting impression upon Leonard Nimoy. As Christians we are told to be made into the likeness of Christ. We are to be patterning his life on earth. Our thoughts and actions should show the character of Christ. And as we imitate Jesus, acting as he would act, saying what he would say, are we able to see the same marks of change?

Rather than method acting, perhaps Nimoy and Spock can be for us an image of being made into the likeness of our savior. And you know? That’s the true way to “live long and prosper.”

Until next time, may God bless you and yours.

“A question arises whether all the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judicial, shall be left in this body? I think a people cannot be long free, nor ever happy, whose government is in one assembly.”

Black families turning to homeschooling at fastest rate, but why?

The demographics of homeschooling are quickly changing, as African American children are becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of the United States population that is deciding to teach their own … and the reasons might surprise you.

According to the National Home Education Research Institute, there are approximately 220,000 black students currently homeschooling in the U.S.

“I just thought maybe I could do a better job myself,” African American homeschooling mom Vanessa Robinson told The Atlantic. “If he hadn’t been bullied I would have really looked into transferring schools, or going back to where I grew up in Kansas.”

Robinson says that the lack of racial diversity in the school system played a factor in her decision to home school, which she has worked into her busy weekday schedule as a nurse.

Besides bullying, education experts have found that public schools have also failed the black community academically.

Educational researcher Ama Mazama of the Journal of Black Studies has found that the a major part of black Americans’ shift from public schools to homeschooling has to do less with overt schoolyard racism as it does with subliminal racism at the hands of teachers and other school staff.

“We have all heard that the American education system is not the best and is falling behind in terms of international standards,” Mazama expressed. “But this is compounded for black children, who are treated as though they are not as intelligent and cannot do as well, and the standards for them should be lower.”

Personally I have seen this mindset first hand, having moved from a predominately white middle class community to a more racially mixed city school district, I found the school curriculum several years behind my former school district. The lesson school day dragged on as we labored ever so slowly through the course material. The classroom had to nurture the slowest learner in the class at the cost of those who grasped the material much quicker. This left me with a very strong dislike for the education process in general. Since then I have been a very strong and vocal supporter of the home and charter school movements. One size does not fit all, it may be okay for rain coats and sweatshirts but it is not a good fit for education since each child is unique.

Is the Net truly Neutral? How will the FCC ruling affect the ‘free internet’?
The FCC’s Net Neutrality Rules Will Shut Down Innovation on the Internet

By a 3-2 vote, the Federal Communications Commission approved “Net Neutrality” rules on Thursday. According to FCC chairman Tom Wheeler, the new rules “ban blocking, ban throttling, and ban paid-prioritization fast lanes” on the Internet.

To some this sounds like a dream come true, but to those who actually know how the internet works find the ruling disturbing and problematic. When has government intervention ever led to a better experience? Take the latest example of government meddling – Obamacare.

The bottom line is the government saw an industry doing well and wanted to find a way to skim money off the top. Therefore they invented this idea that everyone who accesses the internet super highway should be treated the same, and those who provide service must not treat anyone special or offer special fee structures or bandwidth allotments even though some providers require more bandwidth then others. As a result this industry will be yet another in a long list of industries that are now being managed at the federal level. You as the consumer will no longer have any say or choice in what level of service you will be able to get access to. And in addition you as the user will have to pay the myriad taxes that are going to be leveled on the ISP providers in the form of regulations and fees.

The government has contributed nothing to the expanse of nor the content provided by these ISP services but it wants to get a piece of the action and by so doing put itself in a place to tell everyone involved how to conduct business.

We do not live in a ‘free market’ economy anymore folks. The government is not only able to tell us what WE MUST BUY, but also what WE MUST SELL, and then tell us how me MUST SELL IT and to WHOM.

Could This New Evolution Theory Prove that God Does Not Exist? Don’t Count on It.

I thought evolutionists already proved that God doesn’t exist? At least that’s what they’ve told everybody. How many times have we read that Richard Dawkins’ book The God Delusion finally put belief in God in the grave? Let’s not forget Christopher Hitchens, Daniel C. Dennett, and Sam Harris.

This new theory by an MIT researcher begins with the existence of atoms and energy.

‘You start with a random clump of atoms, and if you shine light on it for long enough, it should not be so surprising that you get a plant,’ Jeremy England said.

Now I have to ask where did the clump of atoms come from, and pray tell who is providing the light source?

When it comes to “Climate Change” we are told that the science is settled. Yet true scientific study insists on failures as well as successes. When science fails to reproduce results lots can be learned by the process. However scientists are not encouraged to publish bad news, or negative results since it is the latest and greatest discovery in scientific talk that garners the headlines and funnels money toward research. There is a disincentive for true scientific study and analysis, instead we find a lucrative market in politically motivated scientific research.

There are many examples of scientific research fails, some of the most notable on the climate change debate are:

  • in the 70’s we were warned of a coming ICE AGE
  • in the 90’s it was the beginning of the end with “Global Warming”
  • now we are being treated to “Climate Change”

So which is it? Are we going to freeze to death or burn to death? Is the earth getting warmer of colder? Does man have an effect on the climate or not and if so how can he neutralize climate disruptions? But since we are told the SCIENCE is settled I guess we will never get the answers to these questions and true scientific discovery will be thwarted.

And that is the last word. This is Al Scott, good day!

How to deal with Islamic Terrorism: What can be done?

And I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus,” wrote the Apostle John in Revelation.

On Sunday, a video surfaced that showed the black-clad jihadists of the ISIL franchise in Libya, The Islamic State in Tripoli Province, beheading 21 Coptic Christians from Egypt on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, staining the waves with blood.

The jihadists made it clear: They beheaded the men because they were “people of the cross, followers of the hostile [sic] Egyptian Church” and announced their aspiration to capture Rome.

Egypt launched swift retaliation, bombing at least seven locations in Libya. Meanwhile, Barack Obama still denied the religious causes of the violence when in his White House statement he said, “We offer our condolences to the families of the victims and our support to the Egyptian government and people as they grieve for their fellow citizens.

ISIL’s barbarity knows no bounds.” Not only does Obama deny the religious motivations of ISIL, he dishonors victims by denying why they were murdered. Not knowing the enemy – that’s how wars are lost.

Obama has said in the past Christian’s have stains in their past and he pointed to the crusades which were wars waged against Arab aggression. Historians note that these crusades were rather ineffectual in their efforts to thwart the Muslim aggression. Perhaps they too underestimated the barbarity of these Muslim terrorists. These groups are bloodthirsty and their barbarism knows no bounds. These groups are not civil and they do not respect life. They are lawless and savage. They view their fight as holy and right and will stop at nothing to meet their goal of world domination. Submit or die is the Muslim cry to all infidels.

Civil societies have a hard time dealing with such barbarism because they are constrained by human decency, a Christian moral compass, that restrains their actions and stays their hand from returning upon the heads of these barbarians the same cruelty they dish out.

The Israelites were faced with a really tough decision when God commanded them to utterly destroy the people living in the land He was giving to the Israelites as and inheritance.

16 However, you must not let any living thing survive among the cities of these people the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

17 You must completely destroy them-the Hittite, Amorite, Canaanite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite-as the Lord your God has commanded you,

18 so that they won’t teach you to do all the detestable things they do for their gods, and you sin against the Lord your God. Deut 20:16-18

God had driven these people from the land because of their DETESTABLE PRACTICES and the THINGS THEY WOULD DO FOR THEIR gods.

I can understand why it would be hard to completely wipe out a people including women and children and livestock. You see these people do not hesitate to kill women and children and wipe out anyone who gets in their way. I wonder if God would call these acts DETESTABLE?

Egypt is doing what America and others threatened by ISIS should be doing. Go on the offensive with a war plan whose goal is the complete elimination of these groups who are doing these detestable practices for their gods.

And that is the way I see it what say you?
