aster is the second most important candy-eating occasion of the year for Americans, who consumed 7 billion pounds of candy in 2001, according to the National Confectioner’s Association.

§In 2000, Americans spent nearly $1.9 billion on Easter candy, while Halloween sales were nearly $2 billion; Christmas, an estimated $1.4 billion; and Valentine’s Day, just over $1 billion.

§Ninety million chocolate Easter bunnies are produced each year.

§Chocolate bunnies should be eaten ears first, according to 76% of Americans. Five percent said bunnies should be eaten feet first, while 4% favored eating the tail first.

§Adults prefer milk chocolate (65%), to dark chocolate (27%)

T

hey are fanciful, often gold wrapped, usually elegantly packaged, full color presentations. From all appearances those chocolate creatures are a delightful treat to eat. On the surface these beauties are elegant and proud. Inside, however, they are an empty hollow shell.

I

do not know about you but I prefer solid chocolate rabbits over the hollow ones. I much prefer to bite into a solid milk chocolate bunny. I have been fooled in the past into purchasing what looked like a solid chocolate rabbit only to get home and find out it was not. One bite is all it took to know I had been deceived. Although it had the appearance of being solid, it did not pass the bite test. Of course I could have employed the pinch test at the store but that would have only left a broken bunny on the shelf where once stood a proud whole rabbit. E312001007

After Easter mark-downs can be found on the broken chocolate rabbits even before the holiday buying season ends. The chocolate still tastes as good as it did when it was in the form of a full standing rabbit, but since it now resembles a pile of chocolate flakes, it lost some of its value. Although the chocolate did not loose any flavor it was no longer pretty to look at.

Hollow rabbits outsell solid rabbits primarily because of the cost. You can get a gigantic 12 inch rabbit for about half the price of a much smaller solid one. Children would love the fact that they have this huge chocolate rabbit to eat, when in reality the amount of actual chocolate in that 12 inch rabbit is less than half of the smaller sized version.

Outwardly these proud rabbits stand tall, but apply just a little amount of pressure and they will crumble. There is no real substance to them. They are of little value when faced with just the slightest bit of pressure. By contrast their solid shelf-mates can withstand tremendous pressure. Have you ever tried biting the head off a solid rabbit?

Solid or Hollow which do you prefer?

O

ur church worship could be looked at from the viewpoint of solid or hollow. Are we worshipping with our whole hearts, souls, mind, spirit, and strength, or is it more of an outward show to win favorable ratings from onlookers?

“In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem. He carried off the treasures of the temple of the Lord and the treasures of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields Solomon had made. So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and assigned these to the commanders of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace. Whenever the king went to the Lord’s temple, the guards bore the shields, and afterward they returned them to the guardroom (2 Chronicles 12:9-11).”

T

he gold was gone. It was replaced with bronze. Although it had an appearance of gold it wasn’t. Bronze is far cheaper to produce than gold and thus less valuable. Although stripped of all the gold, the king made a show of worship anyway. If anyone came to steal these bronze shields would they get anything of value when compared to the golden shields that had been there? Are we “taking away” anything of value from our worship services, any golden nuggets?

Be careful not to let anyone rob you {of this faith} through a shallow and misleading philosophy. Such a person follows human traditions and the world’s way of doing things rather than following Christ. Cola 2:8 (GW)

All across our land many church houses are filled with bronze where once stood gold. What once was solid biblical preaching has been replaced with hollow messages of self-improvement. These messengers appear to preach solid biblical counsel yet their teachings contain no substance. Unable to offer the solid meat of God’s word, they are left with only hollow arguments to the world’s ills. These solid looking brass shields, though golden in appearance, lack the value of pure gold.

It may be milk and it may be chocolate but is it solid? What is your worship made of? Will it stand up under pressure? What is behind that golden appearance? Is it solid or simply hollow? Can you worship when times are rough? Has the enemy come in and taken all the value out of your salvation experience and left you with just a semblance of true worship?

But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness. Isaiah 40:31 (BBE)

Not So Good Friday

By Patrick Oden

goodfri 4546cToday is Good Friday. A curious name because in reality it was a pretty bad Friday.

Imagine if you were a disciple. You had spent three years following a man who more and more seemed like he was the Messiah. He did miracles. He spoke wisdom. He had a power you had never seen in anyone.

Then, on the day in which his power was tested he failed the test. You had given up everything, all that you were, to follow this man and on this Friday he left. He was killed. And this is just the perspective of Jesus‘ followers. Don’t get me started on how bad Jesus’ day was.

“Take this cup from me,” he prayed the night before. God didn’t. It wasn’t his will that Jesus be saved at this point.

On that Friday it was anything but good. Maybe it should be called Miserable Friday, or Awful Friday, or The Worst Friday Ever. Lives were lost on that day, and not just those crucified. Souls were seemingly lost. Everything went wrong. Nothing worked right.

Oh, yeah, Joseph of Arimathea… he was able to get a tomb and bury Jesus before nightfall. At least Jesus wasn’t thrown to the dogs. Thank God for the little blessings, eh?

Yes, the prophets said something about suffering, and disfigurement and the like. But, what is that on such a day? Everything goes wrong. But God does not do wrong things. What are the prophets when one’s own perception sees the troubles bubbling over? They are forgotten words of a past era unable to speak to the present. Jesus is dead. Jesus is buried. Turns out he wasn’t the Messiah after all. We were wrong. He couldn’t even save himself.

Good Friday? There was nothing good about it.

So why call it this? Why is it Good Friday?

Because of Easter. Because two days later he rose from the dead. Friday is only good because we are able to observe the future of the events. We are able to see that Jesus died, but he died for a reason, a reason only seen on Easter morning. We reinterpret the past events based on the later events. All was wrong on that first Friday… except that it was all right because of what would happen two days afterwards.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalms 34:8 (NKJV)

144308_f520Whenever I rent a DVD I have to sit through the upcoming preview section of the disk. Perhaps I am just not technical enough to figure out how to bypass them but in any event I patiently sit through these short snippets of upcoming releases. Many times after seeing these previews I make a note to go see or rent the offering being presented.

Perhaps it is a new action adventure movie or a comedy. Maybe it is the latest sequel to a series. Perhaps it is just a remake of an older story being retold. Whatever the case, these trailers are meant to do one thing and one thing only, make you want to see the film being advertised.

Coming soon to a theater near you, these advertisements can be seen everywhere, most often during a favorite TV program. The advertisers feel that if you are watching the television program then perhaps you would also like the new film coming soon.

NES | KNIGHT RIDER

All advertising does is arouse someone’s appetite for more of what they are offering. For example NBC recently aired the remake of the Knight Rider television series from the 80’s, with a newly designed KITT. It had all the makings of a sequel. During the program NBC ran an ad spot offering a chance to win your very own KITT, Knight Rider Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang. Who wouldn’t want to have a KITT to park in their driveway? I mean, what an appealing idea. here is your very own KITT. All you have to do is sign onto a web site, and answer a few questions from the program, for your chance to win one of four Ford cars being offered by the program.

I wanted one! That would be cool! To think I could have one for my very own! Thus the power of advertising worked on

me. I did not however go to the web site to take a chance on winning the car because chances, and I, just do not seem to live in the same neighborhoods. In any event the result of the advertisement made me want to get one.

Knight Rider Season 4 DVD
Knight Rider - Season Four

I had anticipated the airing of the new Knight Rider program for weeks because NBC would run their sneak peak trailer during most of their prime time programming. They wanted to make sure that enough people anticipated the airing that they would have a huge audience when the time came for the actual program to be aired. I do not know how many tuned in for that 2 hour premier but I was at least one.

One of the sponsors of the program was the new movie ‘Vantage Point’. A movie starring Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, Sigourney Weaver, and William Hurt. An action adventure movie in which the President gets shot. And then the plot twists and turns depending on how you look at things from your vantage point. Anyway I went to see this film.

The point of all this is to say that there is a lot to be said for these sneak peeks. We find them everywhere in our society. Try before you buy, free sample, and the aforementioned movie and television program trailers. This tool has been around for a long time.

Newspapers and magazines have upcoming features in them as well. They are all meant to get you to look forward to an upcoming event or article or series. The previews are written in such a way to make you want to get more information, or buy the item, or attend the event. Sneak peeks therefore are proven to be successful.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants–things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, Revelation 1:1 (NKJV)

The apostle John had a sneak peek of upcoming events after he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos. During this time he was given a vision of heaven and of things to come. God showed John a sneak peek, a preview. During this time John recorded for us, all that he had seen and heard.

Just like any great movie trailer Revelation is full of imagery and drama. An action adventure just waiting for world wide release, coming soon to a town and city near you. Full of action, mystery, horror, excitement, drama, and violence, I would expect the motion picture association to rate the film ‘M’ for mature audiences only. Good versus evil, right triumphs over wrong. God wins, the devil looses. What a great story!

Rescue Me

Insight for your "Journey across the Sky"
A View from the Nest www.eagleviews.org

Whoever lives under the shelter of the Most High will remain in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, "{You are} my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust." He is the one who will rescue you from hunters’ traps and from deadly plagues. Psalms 91:1-3 (GW)

Rescue Me logoFX’ airs a program named ’Rescue Me’, a drama about life in a fictional New York City fire station. Each member has their own demons to deal with and the plot line includes the messed up lives of the players, who themselves, need to be rescued from the fires of temptation. Each actor’s shortcomings are ever present as this televised drama unfolds each week. ’Rescue Me’ cries volumes to the world as a testimony to people who give themselves to helping others, but are then unable to help themselves.

All of us at one time or another need to be rescued from the fires of life. Whether it is the need to be rescued from depression, drug addiction, harmful relationships, emotional distress, physical disease or suffering, poverty, homelessness, brokenness or any number of other things from which we need a helping hand. It is comforting to know that help is only a 911 call away.

Emergency Life Hammer
LifeHammer Original Emergency Hammer (Orange)

Once the call comes in, the rescue personnel, although burdened by their own problems, rush to the aid of their fellow man. Reaching out a helping hand to others, many times, helps us forget, or perhaps get through, our own shortcomings. It is by doing for others that we are actually doing for ourselves. We can not reach out a helping hand to someone, without giving our own souls a lift as well. However, that feeling of accomplishment is only short lived, and once we are no longer needed to rescue someone else, we fall right back into the pit of hopelessness and despair, because there is no one to rescue us.

In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina many fingers were pointed as to whom should have done what, and why this, that, or the other thing was not done. Warnings were posted, the alarm had been sounded, weather forecasts showed, without question, the upcoming storm. Several days advance notice was given. The storm was coming. Still many refused to leave and would not heed the warnings until it was too late. Reports came in of people refusing to be rescued from their flooded homes by those who were sent to help them. Sad as it may appear, some preferred to stay in the mess they were in, rather than reach out to the helping hand sent to save them from their malaise.

Just like the television program, many people lead lives of quiet desperation, to quote Henry David Thoreau. It is in their own inabilities to deal with life and cope with problems, that they find relief, if ever so slight, in the rescuing of a fellow human being. By performing acts of bravery and rescue, one feels the joy and elation of being godlike to someone else, an angel of sorts, the bridge between life and death, hope or despair, rescue or disaster, all the while crying out on the inside- can’t anyone rescue me? Why is it that I seem to be the only one who cares enough to help someone else?

Promises Delivered

“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay.” (NIV 2 Corinthians 5.17-18 Grand Rapids: Zondervan. 1984)

http://articles.faithwriters.com/reprint-article-details.php?article=4727

uspsThe USPS has a motto well not really a motto- but more or less it has been attributed to that branch of the federal government that nothing was going to hinder the postal worker from delivering his assigned duties. It is comforting to know that our mail system will get our mail to us in a timely manner and when we expect to receive it. Many other support industries have developed over the years to meet the customer’s need for guaranteed on time delivery. UPS and FEDEX just to name the two most prominent in our society.

In my part of the world there is a company called G.O.D. which stands for ’Guaranteed Overnight Delivery’. What an acronym- to call yourself god. The implication being, that like God, they can be counted on to be on time. Some may choose to argue the on-timeliness of God in some circumstances. Let us take a look at one in particular.

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” 4 When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.” John 11:1-11 (NKJV)

Lazarus lie dead in the grave. Word was sent to Jesus that Lazarus was sick. He delayed his coming until Lazarus was already laying in the grave for four days. Mary said to Him, well it is nice that you are here, but it is too late. We wanted you here days ago. Where were you? Well that is not exactly what she said but I am taking literary license here to emphasize a point. From Mary’s perspective Jesus was late. He did not show up immediately when called upon. God did not send his answer overnight.

I do not know about you but I have spent hours sitting around waiting for certain deliveries in my lifetime. We can probably all relate to the lateness of the cable installer. They promise morning delivery which stretches into the early afternoon, sometimes even later. The time waiting seems intense, especially when you are going through a dramatic experience like Mary was with Lazarus. This was a hard time for the ladies to deal with so they called upon Jesus, expecting him to show up overnight, or even better, immediately.

Best BuyThe internet has spawned a whole new shopping experience with many items able to be delivered almost instantaneously. Best Buy and Circuit City in addition to WalMart have implemented order online for in-store pick up in as little as twenty minutes. Some items like music and digital files can be downloaded immediately upon purchase. Even the movie industry is getting in the practice of making full length movies available online for immediate viewing. Perhaps you are familiar with Pay Per View, when you pick a show and a time and instantaneously you are given access to your purchase.

In our hurry up world and what seems like a shrinking patience for waiting, perhaps we can feel like Mary and Martha did on that fateful day when Lazarus lie sick.

In our above illustration with Lazarus however, Jesus did wait. Four whole days he delayed his coming, but when he got there he was right on time. No matter what we may be going through, we are instructed to persevere, because if we hang onto God, he will show up and when he does all will be well. It is when we are in a hurry and not willing to wait on God that we find ourselves in that place where disbelief can arise. If we truly believe he is the son of the living God then we should also know that nothing in life or the next world to come can separate us from the love of God through Christ Jesus. That is a promise delivered.

Have faith in God and wait upon His timing, for no matter when He chooses to show up, He will be right on time. Guaranteed on-time delivery. That is just like GOD.

But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness. Isaiah 40:31 (BBE)
