Paint the Town White For the Environment

The DODO bird is back, the once thought extinct bird showed up at the climate change symposium in London.

US wants to paint the world white to save energy

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday the Obama administration wanted to paint roofs an energy-reflecting white, as he took part in a climate change symposium in London.

The Nobel laureate in physics called for a “new revolution” in energy generation to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

But he warned there was no silver bullet for tackling climate change, and said a range of measures should be introduced, including painting flat roofs white.

Making roads and roofs a paler colour could have the equivalent effect
of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years, Chu said.

It was a geo-engineering scheme that was “completely benign” and would
keep buildings cooler and reduce energy use from air conditioning, as
well as reflecting sunlight back away from the Earth.

For people who found white hard on the eye, scientists had also
developed “cool colours” which looked to the human eye like normal
ones, but reflect heat like pale colours even if they are darker shades.

And painting cars in cool or light colours could deliver considerable savings on energy use for air conditioning units, he said.

Speaking at the start of a symposium on climate change hosted by the Prince of Wales and attended by more than 20 Nobel laureates, Chu said fresh thinking was required to cut the amount of carbon created by power generation.

College educated, Chu believes that if we just paint all our cars and house roofs white we could effectively reduce climate change the equivalent of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 yrs. I think he should get his money back from the college he went to. Apparently he did not learn any “real knowledge” at that University. Yup sounds like one flew over the cuckoo’s nest on that one. Can I hear anyone say LOONIE TUNES? Cuckoo cuckoo. Me thinks this guy is too smart by half. Not a very good advertisement for University either. What say you?

  1. What part of the Boltzman equation don’t you understand ?

Is your rejection of the first law of thermodynamics an article of faith, or have you got something new and different to tell us about the effect of sitting down on a black vinyl seat in a car that’s been parked in the sun ?

If Chu gives you pause, try the August 21 2000 issue of Forbes, – you may find the piece entitle Paint The Town White downright edifying.

    1. There is nothing wrong with the first law of thermodynamics, but in my opinion just because a black seat gets hot when it sits in the sun, painting it white is not going to cool the sun down any, nor the air around the hot seat. The notion that painting everything white to reflect the HEAT BACK into the atmosphere will somehow cause the earth to cool is ludicrous. To think that educated people would actually believe this is what I found so LOONY. I admit I am not the brightest bulb in the lamp but come on you guys are kidding right? You can not be serious? My momma once said that some people are so smart they are stupid. You and Chu make two who might just fall into that category. I could not find the article you referenced but I did find this one and it makes a bit more sense then MR CHU did in his article. I am not disputing the effects that HOT PAVEMENT has on the air immediately around it, but painting everything white get real. From the MIT article one could reasonably conclude that if you just bulldozed all the cities down and planted trees you could END GLOBAL WARMING. How is that for a solution to the HOT AIR problem. I might propose another solution and that would be to muzzle all the talking heads on TV and especially all those politicians. That should eliminate a good bit of hot air too eh?

Those two ideas are just as silly as painting the town white is. Granted having a white rook would make living a little more comfortable in the house, but come on would the effects be as effective as taking all the cars in the world off the road for 11 years? I think not. But hey I do not have a college degree so I can not possibly know anything I guess. I beg to differ.

What do you have to say?
