When Your Cup Feels Empty

There are seasons when the soul feels like a desert—cracked, dry, sun‑bleached, and silent. You pray, but the words feel thin. You worship, but the well feels low. You keep moving, but the ground beneath you feels like sand slipping through your fingers.

And yet, it is in these very places—these barren, thirsty stretches—that God does His most intimate work. He does not wait for us to be full. He meets us in the emptiness.

The woman at the well came with an empty jar and an emptier heart. David wandered through valleys where shadows stretched long and water was scarce. Israel walked through wilderness places where thirst became a test of trust.

And so we pray:

“Fill my cup, Lord. Fill it until the desert blooms.”

The old hymn captures the cry of every thirsty soul. It’s the same cry the woman at the well carried, the same cry David prayed in the valley, the same cry we bring into our own deserts. The world offers cups that run dry — but God offers a cup that overflows.

God does not avoid deserts—He enters them. He walks into the wilderness with us, not after we escape it. He brings water to barren places, strength to weary bones, and hope to hearts that feel sun‑scorched.

He does not despise the desert. He transforms it.

The Overflow Is Coming

When God fills a cup, it never stops at the brim. His nature is abundance. His heart is generosity. His presence is overflow.

David didn’t say, “My cup is full.” He said:

“My cup runs over.”

That is the promise for every believer who lifts their cup in faith. Not a trickle. Not a drop. Not a barely‑enough stream.

Overflow.

WATCHMAN REPORT: It Is Time to Cross Over

A Prophetic Call to Stop Wandering and Step Into Promise

There comes a moment in every generation when God stops speaking to the crowd and begins speaking to the remnant. A moment when the cloud no longer circles the same mountain, when the manna no longer satisfies, and when the Lord Himself declares that the season of wandering has reached its appointed end. That moment came for Israel in the days of Joshua and Caleb, and it is coming again for the church in our day.

The tragedy of Israel’s wilderness was not the giants in Canaan, nor the fortified cities, nor the strength of the enemy. The tragedy was that ten voices—just ten—held back an entire nation from entering the promise of God. Scripture records it plainly: “They brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land”** (Numbers 13:32)**. Ten men froze the faith of millions. Ten men turned a nation’s destiny into a forty‑year funeral procession. Ten men became stumbling blocks instead of stepping stones.

And the Spirit of the Lord is asking His people again: “Are you a stepping stone into promise, or a stumbling block that keeps others wandering?”

The Stumbling Block Spirit: When Fear Masquerades as Wisdom

Jesus Himself warned, “Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks… but woe to the one through whom the stumbling block comes”** (Matthew 18:7). Paul echoed it when he wrote, “Resolve not to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother” (Romans 14:13)**. A stumbling block is not always a sin of commission; often it is a sin of hesitation, a sin of fear, a sin of clinging to the familiar when God is calling His people forward.

This is the condition of many churches today. A handful of elders, board members, or long‑standing influencers—good people, sincere people, but fearful people—stand at the riverbank and say, “We see the promise, but we cannot cross. Let us go back to what is comfortable.” They lead congregations to the edge of inheritance only to turn them around again, back toward the wilderness of routine, nostalgia, and spiritual stagnation.

They do not realize that their caution has become rebellion, their tradition has become a chain, and their leadership has become a stumbling block to the very people they claim to shepherd.

The Joshua and Caleb Company: Those Who Carry a Different Spirit

But God always preserves a remnant. Joshua and Caleb stood before the same giants, saw the same land, heard the same reports, and yet declared, “If the Lord delights in us, He will bring us into this land”** (Numbers 14:8)**. Scripture says they had “a different spirit” (Numbers 14:24). They were not reckless; they were faithful. They were not naïve; they were obedient. They were not dreamers; they were believers.

And like Joshua and Caleb, there are men and women today who feel the ache of delay, the frustration of circling, the weight of watching others refuse to move. They are ready to cross. They are ready to inherit. They are ready to obey. But they find themselves surrounded by those who say, “Not here. Not now. Not us.”

This is not because the Joshuas and Calebs are out of order. It is because the wilderness generation is out of alignment.

A Prophetic Warning: Do Not Be the One Who Holds Others Back

The Spirit is speaking with urgency: “Examine yourselves. Are you moving with Me, or resisting Me? Are you a stepping stone into promise, or a stumbling block that keeps others wandering?”

This is not a word of condemnation. It is a word of invitation. A call to self‑examination. A summons to courage. A warning to those who cling to Egypt while singing about Canaan. A reminder that God will not wait forever for a stubborn generation to obey.

Just as in the days of Moses, God is moving the resistant out of the way. Not in anger, but in mercy—so that the next generation can cross.

Some will awaken. Some will resist. Some will wander until the end. But the remnant will cross.

The Watchman’s Cry: It Is Time to Cross Over

This is the hour when the Lord is saying, “You have circled this mountain long enough. Turn northward.” (Deuteronomy 2:3)

The wilderness season is ending. The Jordan is rising. The manna is ceasing. The cloud is shifting. The promise is calling.

And the question that remains is simple:

Will you cross over, or will you cling to the wilderness? Will you be a stepping stone, or a stumbling block? Will you move with God, or resist Him?

The watchman’s trumpet is sounding. The river is before us. The land is ready. The giants are already trembling. And the Lord is saying:

“Be strong and courageous. For you shall cause this people to inherit the land.” (Joshua 1:6)

It is time to cross over. It is time to stop wandering. It is time to step into promise.

Encouragement to the Remnant: God Has Not Forgotten Your Wandering

Before the trumpet sounds and the call to cross over is complete, there must be a word to the remnant — to the few, the faithful, the ones who have carried the ache of Joshua and Caleb in their own bones.

God has not forgotten you.

He has seen every mile you walked behind people who refused to move. He has heard every sigh you breathed while others hardened their hearts. He has watched you eat manna with the multitude even though you once tasted the fruit of the land. He has counted every tear shed over a promise delayed by the stubbornness of others.

Joshua and Caleb did not wander because they lacked faith. They wandered because they were faithful in the midst of those who were not.

And God took note.

When the wilderness generation died off, God did not give Caleb a valley. He did not give him a plain. He did not give him a safe, easy inheritance.

He gave him the high country. The rugged country. The elevated country. The country where the giants lived.

Because the remnant always receives the high road, not the low one.

The high country is symbolic — it is the place of clarity, the place of courage, the place of elevation, the place where the faithful stand above the fear that once surrounded them. It is the inheritance of those who kept their spirit alive while others let theirs die.

And so the Lord says to the remnant in this hour:

“I have seen your wandering. I have seen your faithfulness. I have seen your longing for more. You will not die in the wilderness. Your mountain is waiting.”

Take heart, you who have walked with the wanderers. Your delay has not been denial. Your suffering has not been wasted. Your faith has not been forgotten.

The high country belongs to the faithful. And the faithful will cross over.

After Easter: Teaching Children to Seek Christ

Introduction

Easter weekend has come and gone, and the familiar rhythm has played itself out once again. The eggs were scattered across the yard, the children ran with excitement, the baskets were filled, and the candy disappeared almost as quickly as it was found. Yet when the noise settles and the sugar rush fades, a deeper question rises to the surface, one that lingers long after the decorations have been boxed up and the plastic eggs have been stored away. What, exactly, have we taught our children to search for? What desires have we shaped in them? What appetites have we awakened? And what kind of treasure have we placed before their eyes?

The Biblical Metaphor of Searching

Jesus spoke often about searching, but His stories carried a weight far greater than seasonal traditions or childhood games. He described a man who stumbled upon something so valuable that it redefined his entire life. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.” [Matthew 13:44] He also spoke of a merchant whose entire livelihood revolved around discerning value, a man who spent his days searching for pearls, until one day he found a pearl so surpassingly precious that it eclipsed everything else he had ever seen. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” [Matthew 13:45–46]

These stories were not about candy, prizes, or seasonal excitement. They were not about momentary joy or temporary rewards. They were about Christ Himself, the Treasure hidden in plain sight, the Pearl of Great Price whose worth cannot be measured and whose glory cannot be exhausted. Jesus was not calling His followers to a weekend of searching but to a lifetime of seeking. He was not inviting them to a brief moment of excitement but to a continual pursuit of the One who alone satisfies the soul.

The Problem with Cultural Traditions

Yet when we look at the patterns we place before our children, we must be honest about what we are actually teaching them. At Christmas, we tell them to look under the tree. At Easter, we tell them to search for eggs. Throughout the year, we reward behavior with trinkets, treats, and temporary pleasures. Without realizing it, we disciple them into a rhythm of searching for what is fleeting rather than what is eternal. We train them to chase what is hollow rather than what is holy. We hand them empty eggs while Christ offers a tomb that is gloriously filled with resurrection power.

Earthly vs. Heavenly Treasures

Scripture speaks plainly about the difference between earthly treasures and heavenly ones. Jesus warned His disciples with unmistakable clarity: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven… for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” [Matthew 6:19–21] Earthly treasures fade, break, melt, or disappear. Heavenly treasures endure forever. Earthly rewards satisfy for a moment. Heavenly rewards satisfy for eternity. Earthly searching ends in an empty basket. Heavenly searching ends in a transformed heart.

The Open Invitation to Seek Christ

The world hides plastic eggs in the grass, but the Father does not hide His Son in the same way. He reveals Him openly in the Scriptures, where the prophets, the psalms, and the apostles testify of Him. He reveals Him in creation, where the heavens declare the glory of God. He reveals Him in the quiet tug of the Spirit, who draws the heart toward repentance and faith. The prophet Isaiah issued a timeless invitation that still echoes across the centuries: “Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near.” [Isaiah 55:6] The call to seek God is not seasonal. It is not tied to a holiday. It is not dependent on decorations, traditions, or cultural rhythms. It is a daily summons to pursue the One who pursued us first.

Living the Resurrection Daily

Every year, Easter fades. The decorations return to their boxes. The baskets are shoved into closets. Life resumes its ordinary pace. Yet the resurrection was never meant to be a weekend event. It was meant to be the launching point of a lifelong pursuit. The early church did not gather once a year to remember an empty tomb. They lived in the power of the resurrection every single day. Luke records that they “continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” [Acts 2:42] Their lives were marked by continual devotion, continual seeking, continual hunger for the presence of God.

Reclaiming the Search

Somewhere along the way, we traded that daily pursuit for a calendar event and a candy hunt. We replaced the search for Christ with the search for trinkets. We substituted the Pearl of Great Price with plastic eggs. We exchanged the eternal for the temporary, the holy for the hollow, the substantial for the superficial.

Perhaps it is time to reclaim the search. Perhaps it is time to teach our children that the greatest treasure is not hidden in the yard but revealed in the Word. Perhaps it is time to show them that the most valuable pursuit is not for what melts in the sun but for the One who reigns at the right hand of the Father. Perhaps it is time to remind them that the greatest discovery is not found in a basket but in a Savior who stepped out of the grave.

Conclusion

The invitation still stands, as clear and compelling as ever: “Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near.” [Isaiah 55:6] After the candy is gone and the decorations are boxed up, let us point our families to the only Treasure worth searching for, the only Pearl worth selling everything to obtain, the only Savior who conquered death and offers life everlasting. And may our children grow up knowing that the greatest search of their lives is not for what is hidden in the grass but for the Christ who is revealed in the Gospel, the risen Lord who calls them to Himself with love, truth, and eternal promise.

Some hymns comfort the heart, and some cleanse it. There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood does both. William Cowper, a man who knew the depths of despair and the fierce mercy of God, wrote this hymn. It is not polished or ornamental. It is honest. It is vulnerable. It is the cry of a soul. The soul has discovered that the only place to find cleansing is at the foot of the cross. It also finds healing there. Hope is found at the foot of the cross too.

Cowper’s words are not theoretical. They rise from a life marked by suffering, doubt, and repeated battles with darkness. And yet, out of that struggle came a powerful declaration of grace. It stands as one of the most profound in all of hymnody. The blood of Christ is not merely symbolic. It is effective, cleansing, restoring, and sufficient. A Funny Story With a Not‑So‑Funny Truth

Three men went deer hunting, and as they crossed a field on their way to the woods, a massive buck jumped up right in front of them. All three fired at the same moment. The buck dropped instantly, and the men hurried over—only to realize they had a problem. Who actually shot the deer?

As they stood there debating, a game warden approached to check licenses. Hearing the dilemma, he knelt down, examined the buck, and said, “One of you is a preacher, right?” Sure enough, one of them was. The warden nodded and said, “Well, the preacher’s the one who got him.” The men stared at him in disbelief. “How can you know that?” The warden shrugged. “Simple. The bullet went in one ear and out the other.”

It’s a humorous story, but beneath the laughter lies a sobering truth—one James warned the church about with prophetic clarity when he wrote, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).


When Hearing Becomes Self‑Deception

Hearing is not the problem. Hearing without obeying is. A message that goes in one ear and out the other never reaches the heart, and the heart is the only place where real transformation takes place. Jesus Himself said the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). The mind matters. The mind is essential. But the mind is not the destination. It is the doorway. The heart is the target.

The preacher in the story fired a shot that passed through the deer’s head but never touched the heart. It produced death, not life. It left a carcass, not a conversion. And that is exactly what happens when the Word of God is received only at the level of intellect. It may pass through the mind, but if it never penetrates the heart, it cannot produce obedience, repentance, or new life. It becomes information without transformation.


A Wound That Never Heals Becomes Fatal

Here is the deeper truth: a bullet that never reaches the heart can still kill you. It can wound you. It can tear flesh, rupture arteries, and leave you bleeding out. A wound is not harmless simply because it missed the center.

And the same is true of the Word when it is only received intellectually. A sermon aimed at the mind alone may not transform you, but it can still wound you. It can leave you convicted but unchanged, aware of truth but still resisting it. You can feel the sting of conviction without ever surrendering to it. And that kind of wound, left unattended, becomes spiritually fatal.

The writer of Hebrews says, “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two‑edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). The Word is designed to pierce. It is meant to cut deep enough to expose motives, confront sin, and bring healing through repentance. But when the Word is only admired, analyzed, or agreed with—when it is heard but not obeyed—it becomes a cut that never closes. Over time, the soul begins to hemorrhage. Not because the Word failed, but because the heart never yielded.


When the Lips Say “Amen” but the Heart Stays Distant

Jesus described this condition when He said, “This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me” (Matthew 15:8). The mind can say “Amen” while the heart remains untouched. The intellect can applaud truth while the will refuses to bow to it.

James continues this warning by saying, “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror… and goes away and at once forgets what he was like” (James 1:23–24). The problem is not the hearing. The problem is the forgetting. The problem is the lack of response. The problem is the absence of obedience.

Truth that only grazes the mind can still leave a person spiritually dying. Truth that never reaches the heart cannot save. Truth that never produces obedience becomes a slow bleed. Eternal death does not always come from outright rebellion. Sometimes it comes from a lifetime of sermons that never penetrated deeper than the intellect.


The Word Must Be Received With Surrender, Not Just Agreement

This is why preaching must aim for the heart. This is why hearing must lead to doing. This is why the Word must be received with surrender, not merely agreement. Jesus said, “Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24). Hearing is the beginning. Doing is the evidence. Obedience is the fruit. Transformation is the result.

Do not let God’s Word pass through you without penetrating you. Do not let it skim the surface of your mind without sinking into the soil of your heart. Do not let it go in one ear and out the other. Slow down. Meditate. Respond. Obey. Let the Word reach the place where life is changed. Let it pierce, not to destroy, but to heal. Let it cut, not to wound, but to free. Let it strike the heart, for only there does the Word bring life. It isn’t about how much Bible you know or can quote but how much you actually put into practice.
