Random Ramblings from the Resident Raptor

Consider the ant, you lazy bum. Watch its ways, and become wise. Although it has no overseer, officer, or ruler, in summertime it stores its food supply. At harvest time it gathers its food. Prov 6:6-8 (GW)

Author’s commentary:

Lately I have been pondering the harder sayings from the scriptures, you know the ones that you hardly ever hear preached on a Sunday morning. This article will fall under this category of the ’hard sayings’ of scripture and as such it will probably offend some who read it. Discipline is difficult to handle at any age but especially to someone who has led an undisciplined life for a long time. Having to look at ourselves critically is never easy and for that reason I suspect some will be discomforted by this article. If making some people uncomfortable brings about serious discussion on the topic at hand then, as a writer, I have achieved my aim.

On July 20th 2010 the Senate passed an unemployment extension bill which provided additional funding to states to help pay for the 99 weeks of unemployment benefits mandated earlier by federal law. Now I ask you does there ever come a time when these benefits end? 99 weeks is almost 2 years to sit idly by and pick the pocket of your neighbors. When does it become time for an individual to do whatever he or she has to do to rise up early and gather the harvest for his/herself?

In our scripture today I used the Good News translation of Proverbs 6 because it says it like it is. There is no ambiguity in this passage. It is clear, the ant, unlike humans, knows when it is time to store up food for the time when there will be none. Of course the ant does not borrow against tomorrow by eating up 30 or more years of provisions in any given year because ants can not borrow money, they have to live season to season. I fear far too many of the human species have borrowed their futures and are now finding that when the famine comes, they are unable to meet their seasonal requirements because they have already spent their storehouses by future borrowing.

Pay attention to this! You’re saying, “Today or tomorrow we will go into some city, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money.” You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. What is life? You are a mist that is seen for a moment and then disappears. Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and carry out our plans.” However, you brag because you’re arrogant. All such bragging is evil. James 4:13-16 (GW)

Unemployment is a fact of life, economic downturns are as well. Thinking that you can continue to buy and sell and profit without considering the consequences is foolish and the scriptures says evil bragging. The ant does not rely upon governments or elected leadership to provide for its needs, it simply goes about doing what it knows to do, store up when there is a bounty to have plenty where there is none. Ants apparently know the economic seasons far better than humans do.

I have been in the unemployment line on more than one occasion in my lifetime. Although I do not look forward to such times I do know they are a part of life, at least in the jobs that I have held. I do understand that federal employees are employees for life, and not being a federal employee I do not have that kind of benefit. Of course when you are being supported by every taxpaying worker in the country I guess your economic downturns are not as rough as the family who is relying on only one or two wage earners.

Now before anyone throws firebombs at me I want to make myself clear. I am not opposed to helping someone out at a time of need, but I do have to wonder how long I am supposed to help a brother out who is making no effort to help himself? If 99 weeks is not long enough should we extend benefits for lets say 3 years? How about 5? The most unemployment benefits I was ever eligible for was 26 weeks. Perhaps I should reconsider working and just sit home and take money from my neighbor for almost 2 years before considering going back to work. Consider some of the remarks to the late passage of this bill:

(The bill) does NOT extend the $25/week FAC payment for new claimants. The biggest problem with this omission is that MILLIONS of Americans who have been able to find only part-time work are losing the $25/wk. The bill does include a “fix” for some part-time workers–but only for those whose weekly benefit amounts go down by $100 or 25%. The rest of us–MILLIONS OF US–are forced to open “new claims,” and as a result not only does our weekly benefit amount go down (for example by $93/wk.) but we also LOSE the $25 FAC payment!! We accepted jobs, any jobs we could find, and now we are being punished by losing the $25 FAC–while those who did not work at all will continue to get the $25 FAC!! This is so unfair!!

Really unfair is it? Since when is working considered punishment? Could it be that this person only took a job so they could continue to collect benefits rather than seeking a permanent solution to their unemployment problem? And why does it come as a surprise to them when the one who giveth also taketh away? Why are they not complaining about the government policies that brought about this economic downturn in the first place?

Out here in CA, I too was getting the maximum unemployment benefit ($450/week) but I took a low quality part time job in order to not refuse any work. Then when I had to file a new claim to get the federal extension, it only considered the low quality part time job income. So assuming the bill passes today, I’ll start getting 1/3 of what I was getting ($150/week) until I can find a job. If I had not taken the part time job, I think I would still be at the max level. No good deed goes unpunished…

See above comment as well. This person took a low paying job in order to keep receiving money for not working rather than seeking to work and not take the money. And then they say they would be better off if they did not work at all but relied upon the government (others who pay taxes) to provide them a living? What am I missing here?

I hope the unemployed remember that the republicans tried to block them from getting their benefits come election time. The truth is that the economy desperately needs some stimulus right now and unemployment benefits are the most effective stimulus there is. The money gets spent immediately by the unemployed and enters the economy.

Really? I did not know that the unemployed stimulated the economy as much as the employed do? Well I could be wrong but what I have found to be the best stimulus of my economy is a good paying job. I have never found unemployment benefits a help in stimulating my economy, at the very least they kept me off the street but I never expected them to provide much economic stimulus. Since most are paying about 2/3 of what I would make if I was working. The source for all of the above is found here

Extend unemployment benefits? No thank you, I think I will look toward the ant and stay out of debt, work hard when I have work and save for the droughts that are sure to come, especially under the current leadership. Although I may be effected by their policies my life does not depend upon them, for my hope comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. I pray for the Lord’s will that I am able to work and provide for my needs without having to look to others to do so. And when I find myself in want, I shall cry out to the Lord, my ever present help in time of need. Of course we must discern the difference between wants and needs.

As King David said so eloquently: I have been young, and now I am old, but I have never seen a righteous person abandoned or his descendants begging for food. Psalms 37:25 (GW)

But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness. Isaiah 40:31 (BBE)

As a major shareholder in the newly formed Government Motors I demand to know when I can pick up my company car. Could someone tell me which of the dealerships still in business are taking requests for company cars? Now that I am the majority stock holder in the company I would like to have as one of my perks a nice new company car and not one of them HYBRIDS either. I want one of those big old gas guzzlers that the President drives. If Ms Pelosi can fly around in a company jet, and the President can drive around in his fleet of SUV‘s then AS A MAJOR SHAREHOLDER IN GOVERNMENT motors SO CAN I.

Please make delivery of my new company car to the address you have on file in my Share HOLDERS portfolio. THANK YOU.

“The real thing.” “It brings good things to life.” “When you care enough to send the very best.” “The choice of a new generation.” “Built tough.” “Don’t leave home without it.” “It’s everywhere you want to be.” “Just do it.” “Be All that You Can Be.” “The savings place.” “Membership has it’s privileges.”

How many of these ad slogans have you heard? Can you name the products associated with these ad campaigns? What image comes to mind when you hear these slogans? And does the product advertised live up to its ad campaign? Would you recommend these products to someone else?

How did you do with naming the products? Did you get them all? If not here is the answers to the slogans in order. Coke, GE, Hallmark, Pepsi, Ford, Master Card, VISA, NIKE, the Army and finally your local church. Oh you thought your savings place was Walmart and American Express‘ membership has privileges? Okay I admit “The Savings Place” is a trademark of Walmart, and American Express did coin the phrase “Membership has it’s privileges but in a way all these terms could be applied to the brand “Christian.”

Walmart has become known as the savings place. In fact I can pretty much guarantee that more people will enter into a local Walmart each week then will enter a local church building. We, as a culture, spend more time, effort, and resources in the pursuit of happiness and material things, then we do in the pursuit of spiritual enrichment and fulfillment. I am sure more people can identify the products being advertised above with little or no problem but when confronted with listing the 10 commandments, or reciting the beatitudes they will stumble. Perhaps one of the reasons for this lack of interest in the real SAVINGS PLACE, is the tarnished name brand.

Just pause for a moment and reflect with me as I take out my DISCOVER card and take you on a journey of enlightenment. Imagine the next time you grab an ice cold Coca Cola and pop open the aluminum can, bring it up to your mouth for a refreshing taste of it’s cooling refreshment but instead your taste buds are overwhelmed by the taste of soggy cardboard. How excited would you be for another refreshing taste of Coca Cola?

Take as another example the experience of walking into your nearest appliance store and look at all the refrigerators on display. You find the one you have been looking for, a nice silver toned GE fridge with water in the door and an automatic ice dispenser. You pay for it and have it delivered the next day only to find out that when it is plugged in, instead of keeping your food cold it did not work and all your food spoiled. Not a very good experience is it?

Or how about we head on over to the local “Savings Place” and do our regular weekly shopping. We load our shopping carts up with one bargain priced item after another and proceed to the check out lanes. You arrive at the check out lanes to find only one lane open and there are 25 people in front of you. You wait patiently for the line to move and finally it is your turn to check-out. Well just at that moment the head cashier comes over and closes the lane down and says she will be right with you. She presses a few buttons on the register and replaces the cash drawer and then says to the checker it is okay to check you out. Finally you sigh in relief. You place your items on the checkout lane and proceed to watch the checker ring up one item after the other. But instead of ringing the SUPER LOW PRICES you found on the shelf, everything seems to be priced much higher than you had thought. Finally you are presented with the total and you are shocked to find your grand total to be over $1000.00. You probably would say to the clerk… ‘thanks but no thanks’ and leave the “SAVINGS PLACE” to find yet another place to save.

I gather by now you are getting the idea where I am going with this article. What does one do when the advertised product does not live up to it’s advertising slogan? What do you do when you find out that the “Savings Place” is actually charging more for their products then the “high priced” chain store is? How do you feel when you bring home what you believe to be a quality product only to find out it does not do what it is supposed to do? Have you ever experienced any of these situations? I am sure you have at one time or another in your lifetime.

Nationally known products spend a great deal of money on their advertising campaigns to make their products a household name. They want you to be thinking of their product when you go out shopping. That is why they have created many clever advertising campaigns down through the years. However, if they did not put out a quality product in support of those advertising claims, no one would continually buy their products, no matter how much it was advertised.

In a lot of ways, Christians are supposed to be like those advertising agencies. They are called to market the brand “Christianity” to the entire world. They are supposed to be the living, breathing, walking, talking advertisement for the name of “Christian.” What does the world see when they tune into your ad campaign? What attributes of the brand “Christian” do they see? Do they see, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control, self -discipline, hope, and faith? Or do they see, strife, envy, backbiting, gossip, and such like? Does your advertisement entice anyone to want to buy your product? What image comes to mind when you hear the brand name “Christian?” And does the product advertised live up to its ad campaign? Would you recommend “Christianity” to someone else? If not why not?

The “Christian” brand has been much maligned by the purveyors of that brand. It is a shame that many have TAKEN THE NAME OF THE LORD (CHRISTIAN) IN VAIN. They really had no intentions of living up to that BRAND NAME but rather decided to market it to a new generation by changing it’s ingredients, and changing its business plan. Therefore the brand “Christian” has been watered down and twisted out of shape. Now is the time for those who wear the label “Christian” and take the name-brand seriously to stand up for it, defend it, and live it in a way that brings glory to the manufacturer of that brand, JESUS himself. It is time that those who wear the name of “Christian” live up to the ’brand’s requirements. The gospel of Christ does not have to be made-over. It does not have to be modernized, it just has to be lived rightly.

Jesus is still the same today as He was in the beginning. God is still in the business of saving souls. ” The church should be known as “the” savings place. God actually did care enough to send His very best. And the Holy Spirit, not GE is what brings good things to your life.” Jesus is “the real thing” and He is the choice of “the renewed generation (2 Cor. 5:17). The brand “Christian” is rock solid and built tough because it is founded upon a rock (Mt 16:18). And you do not want to leave home without Jesus. Membership in God’s kingdom does have it’s privileges and you really should “just do it”.

To those who may have had a bad experience with “Christianity”, I encourage you to take another look. Do not look to those who simply wear the brand, but seek out those who actually believe in the brand itself, Jesus. If you seek the Creator of the brand rather than those who simply wear a mock up of the brand, you may just find that He is all that He says He is, and that Jesus is true to His brand. Be all that you can be by joining up in God’s army and wear the brand “Christian” with honor and integrity so that others will want to join up with you. Semper Fi, remain faithful to the brand.

Yes folks we do have a car salesman in the white house. And yes folks he does believe that increasing the cost of doing business actually increases business. And yes folks he believes in spending more money then you have and getting less for it is also good for America. And yes folks he does believe that raising taxes will actually stimulate the economy.

Would you like tires for your car? You do know they are an added extra, that will cost you another $3000 because of the environmental impact tax to pay for their later disposal. Do we have a deal?

This past week an American captain of a humanitarian cargo vessel was held captive by 4 thugs who were attempting to trade his life for a million dollar ransom. Instead all they got was a bullet between the eyes and the captain was rescued unharmed.

Actually this whole incident sounds very familiar. You may wish to read about it here:

Lessons From the Barbary Pirate Wars

These pirates saw these ships of commerce going past their shoreline and, because they do not value other people’s property rights, they coveted what others had and made a siege on these unarmed merchant ships. They then hold the cargo and crews hostage until they can shake down the companies for payoffs. This has been going on for quite some time but just recently it seems to be making headlines.

We as American citizens saw the piracy against merchant vessels as an outrage and demanded that something be done about it. Decisive action was taken by our brave men and women of the Navy and the situation was diffused and the innocent captain was freed from the clutches of these evil pirates.

All this happened around the world off the shores of Africa yet on our own homeland, it would appear that piracy is the norm. We have pirates hijacking the ship of state and beating the captain of the vessels of commerce into coughing up huge payoffs. To me this does not appear to be much different from the piracy occurring to merchant vehicles on the high seas. If this was another time in our history, the whole concept of a strong armed man coming up to an unarmed merchant demanding a payoff would have been met with criminal prosecution or, like the pirates of the American ship, a shot between the eyes.

This type of conduct was considered thuggery. We even had a special name for it, we called those who practiced this type of strong armed robbery, the mob. Law enforcement set up special task forces to deal with the Chicago style mob rule and vigorously pursued these thugs until the streets where cleared of their influence.

History’s Turning Points II, Volume 5: The Rise of the Mob

The mob moved from the streets into the government and continued to practice their trade. Instead of robbing vessels on the open sea they brought their practices to the homeland and set up shop in our political class. They see the ships of commerce traversing the landscape and they board them with onerous regulations and legislative redtape in attempts to slow the wheels of commerce. With these regulations they are then able to strong arm the companies they hijack into giving them a payoff for the privilege of continuing to navigate freely on the sea of commerce.

Eventually these pirates grow tired of only collecting a portion of the proceeds and they decide it would be far better to take over the whole vessel and displace the captain, therefore they effectively would be in charge of the cargo on this merchant ship. They are now looking for an even greater payout. They want to control the whole ship and not just a portion of it. No longer are these pirates satisfied with a small payout, they want the whole mother lode. If they can control most, if not all of the ships of commerce, then they can control those who benefit from these ships arriving at their appointed destinations. If the people wish to receive the shipments then they will not only have to pay the price for the goods onboard, but they will also have to pay the pirates whatever other fees they demand to release these goods to them.

Now imagine if you will, these pirates get so good at what they do, that they decide to not only take over the ships, but the ports as well as the shipping lanes these ships travel through. They block the access to the canals and shipping lanes and charge exorbitant fees for ships to pass through. And then once they arrive at their destinations they must again pay to dock at a pirate run portal.

Still not satisfied, their greed drives them to want even more. So they set out to control the flow of energy and fuel to these ships of commerce. They make sure that all fuel production must pass their approval and be certified as pirate approved before any of these ships of commerce can fuel and leave port. They are sure to control access and availability of all fuel so that only the approved methods of distribution are operational. All attempts to produce alternate fuel supplies or sources, are met with stern disapproval and unbridled attacks by the pirates and their affiliate agencies.

In their want for more control and even greater payouts, the pirates forget about the most important part of the whole commerce system. The system runs on the backs of those who purchase the products aboard these commerce ships. They fail to realize that eventually those who end up paying the inflated price for goods and services will refuse to do so. Their once lucrative business starts to dry up. They see rapid decreases in the value of their holdings and now must figure out another way to gain control of the ships of commerce.

So they decide the only way to keep the purchasers happy is to bribe them with a portion of the proceeds. They devise an elaborate scheme whereby they confiscate the profits from one ship of commerce and use that to entice the purchasers to buy goods from another.

This works for a while but eventually they run out of sources of additional revenue because every ship that they confiscate the profits from, is one less ship hauling goods on the sea of commerce and thusly one less ship turning a profit. Eventually the whole ship of commerce is sunk by the very pirates that sought to control them. Eventually, all the ships of commerce are sunk—

Now that all the ships are sunk the pirates return to their island and continue to live off the confiscated bounty they hid away. And the people who once flourished off the free flow of goods and services are left destitute.

Perhaps it is time to end all this piracy and free the ships of commerce from the menacing control of these ruthless tyrants of the sea. Unless of course you have a fondness for pirates AY MATEY?

But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness. Isaiah 40:31 (BBE)

Then Congress said, “How does the watchman do his job without instruction?” So they created a planning position and hired two people: one person to write the instructions (GS-12) and one person to do time studies (GS-11).

Then Congress said, “How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?” So they created a Q. C. position and hired two people, one GS-9 to do the studies and one GS-11 to write the reports.

Then Congress said, “How are these people going to get paid?” so they created the following positions, a timekeeper (GS-09) and a payroll officer (GS-11) and hired two people.

Then Congress said, “Who will be accountable for all of these people?” So they created an administrative position and hired three people: an Admin. Officer (GM-13), an Assistant Admin.
Officer (GS-13) and a Legal Secretary (GS-08).

Then Congress said, “We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost,” so they laid off, the night watchman.

Of course the only one cut would be the only one who was actually doing something, the rest where just created positions to push paper around in circles and pretend to be actually doing work. It is a great gig if you can get one but totally worthless as far as actual work is concerned.

And there are some who still think that the Government can run investment banks, insurance companies, auto companies and even health care. Surely you can’t be serious.

This is the main force behind capitalism and the free market system of the United States. A man works expecting to get a return on that work. Companies produce products they hope to sell for a profit. Companies, nor individuals would long endure lengthy periods of non-reward. If a company continues to loose revenue in the course of doing business it would cease doing business. If an individual would be forced to continually work for less or nothing at all, it would not take long before that individual gives up and quits working.

Our economy works the same way. It will cease to operate if all profit is removed from the system through heavy taxation or over regulation. If the cost of doing business exceeds the reward of the same, then business will cease, production will dry up and there will be nothing more to tax or regulate. Therefore allow a workman to make a decent wage, allow companies to operate at a profit, do not MUZZLE the ox that is actually producing. After all if you stop production there will be nothing to take and give to anyone. If however you allow producers to produce there will be enough to not only feed the ox that is doing the work but others as well. Keep the ox happy and you live long and prosper. Bull markets are more favorable then bear markets wouldn’t you think?

Think about it next time you pull the lever for more government taxation, oversight, regulation and intervention.

Pay a man what he is worth and stop muzzling the ox that stamps out the grain. Heavy taxation only stifles the workman because he looses hope in a harvest and gives up. Redistribution of wealth robs a man of his willingness to produce. Taking his hard earned fields in order to give it to someone who has not labored is demoralizing. Heavy taxation upon what a man produces will only cause him to find ways to avoid the heavy taxation or completely give up the process altogether.

Government bailouts are not only non-constitutional I feel they are not even biblical. What say you?

Many times I have watched the “Wizard of Oz” and I still find the story enjoyable. A girl gets lost in a strange land and only desires to go home. She runs into others who are seeking something they feel is missing in their life and in the end they find out that the missing piece was inside of them all along.

It is what is inside that matters. That was the message that I took away from the film. Although our outward circumstances may appear to be less than satisfactory, if we possess a sense of self and a good moral fiber inside, then we can weather any storm that life may throw at us. We can rise above all obstacles if we possess an ‘inner man’ of character. This is what the kind man behind the curtain taught the wandering travelers in their quest for significance.

That being said, there is a scene in the “Wizard of Oz” that I have especially enjoyed—the scene where Toto reveals the man behind the curtain.

A kind elderly gentleman has gone to elaborate lengths to hide his true-self behind a projected image he wanted the world to see. He had even gone so far as to build an entire kingdom around the image of the ‘Great and Powerful Oz’ when all along he was just a kindly old gentleman behind the scenes.

We all wear masks of some sort, putting our best foot forward when we are attempting to persuade others to follow our plans or objectives. It is really evident when applying for and interviewing for a new job or position. We dust off our resumes and make every attempt to put the best face on our past failures while underlining our accomplishments. We want others to see us favorably, regardless of who we really are.

Some people hide behind masks all the time. Some who are less than ethical in their business practices or political dealings, want to keep all the ‘behind the scenes stuff’ hidden from view. They go to great lengths to keep secret the double dealing and dishonest practices they employ to promote their own agendas. It is to this type of people the bible speaks so specifically.

No matter where we go or what we do, the Lord is always watching. He knows all and sees all. There is nothing hidden that He is not able to uncover. No matter how well we hide from ourselves and others, we are unable to hide from God. When the time comes, God will reveal all hidden agendas and motives of our hearts and we will no longer be able to hide behind a mask of piety while we live a life of sin and deception.

We are currently in the last mile of a marathon political campaign and there is one candidate who has gone to great lengths to hide behind one curtain after another, in a concerted effort to hide his true self from the world. While he prances around the world’s stage pretending to be a messenger of change he is masking his true incentives and motives. He is going overboard to convince others that he is not who he would appear to be behind the scenes. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain is his cry. Look instead at this huge image I have manufactured for your adoration and praise. Look instead on the outward and not what really lies on my heart.

But just like the word reveals, when the time comes, EVERYTHING that is done in secret will be revealed from the housetops. Isn’t it interesting that in today’s high tech world there are hardly any secrets anymore? A whisper can be heard around the world in nanoseconds. What was said in California can be heard in Pennsylvania. What you attempt to keep secret can be uncovered with a few strokes of a computer keyboard.

All efforts to hide one’s self behind a curtain is futile. Just like in the ‘Wizard of Oz‘, a small dog can pull back the curtain and reveal one’s true self. Even a child can see behind a curtain. All those attempts to cover-up can easily be revealed.

Wouldn’t it be far better and a whole lot less work to just be who you are? Wouldn’t it be more profitable to be your true self rather than attempting to live a lie? It takes far less effort to just be, rather than to pretend to be. Maintaining an appearance, takes far more effort than just being true to yourself and to others.

When it comes to those who seek to lead others there is a stern warning in the ‘Word of God’ for those who wish to hide behind curtains. God will reveal to all, who we really are, and if like Dorothy, the tin man, the scarecrow or the cowardly lion, He finds goodness inside, He will reward you according to what lies inside, not on what you build around yourself.

So it is wise to pay attention to the man behind the curtain and not get caught up in all the pomp and circumstance, the smoke and the mirrors, the huge stage production with all it’s theatrical sound and lighting. It is wise to take time out to look behind the curtain and see what lies inside a man before you hitch your wagon to their leadership. After all, that is what God is going to do. Shouldn’t you do the same? I challenge all of us to spend more time working on “the man inside”, rather than the curtains we craft to hide our true selves.

But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness. Isaiah 40:31 (BBE)

He could answer any question. He knew all the tax laws. There wasn’t a better accountant anywhere.

Every morning when he came to work, he would unlock his desk drawer, open it up and look inside for a moment, and then close and lock it again. This puzzled all of his co-workers, because it was the only eccentricity that this genius exhibited. For years no one dared to breach etiquette and snoop through his desk, but his odd behavior became something of a legend around the office.

One day when the elderly man was home sick, one junior accountant could control himself no longer. Taking a letter opener he carefully pried open the desk lock. Inside he found one sheet of paper, and written in large letters was:

“DEBITS ON THE LEFT…CREDITS ON THE RIGHT”

It would appear from today’s headlines that someone moved the debits to the right side and hoped that credits would appear on the left. Of course it was the left side of the political aisle that wanted all these credits given to those who were on the left with them.

Unethical people led this parade down ruin street, keep marching along and you will get more of the same.

NO money down, no interest until the twelve of never, and 0% financing looked good on the front end but how does it look now?
