Of God and Country: God Bless America

Amos 8:11-12 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

As the United States celebrates the 4th of July today – Independence day – we’re often reminded of the price that was paid for our freedom. The founders pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor in defense of the Declaration of Independence. In that same spirit let us recall a time when a heavy price was paid for a translation of our Bible.

William Tyndale, a 16th century Englishman, translated the Bible into English while living in Germany. Finally in 1525, he was able to publish a New Testament in English. But the church authorities at the time were not pleased and they angrily sought to destroy Tyndale and his translation. Finally, he was caught and brought back to England where he was burned at the stake.

As he was dying, he uttered these words: “Lord open the eyes of the King of England.” His prayer became a prophecy, as it was the King of England, King James, who finally did publish the entire Bible in English about a hundred years later.

Our English Bible translations became a reality through William Tyndale’s heroic sacrifice and bravery, ultimately at the price of his lifeblood. The work and sacrifice of William Tyndale not only led to the publishing of the King James Bible but to earlier English translations like the Geneva bible which the pilgrims brought with them to America.

This Independence day, don’t let your Bible sit on the shelf gathering dust. Considering the cost that was paid so you could read it in your native tongue, let’s all take full advantage of this precious gift.

The freedom that we so enjoy on this day is only a taste of the real freedom we have in the Lord; the promise of eternal forgiveness and freedom from sin. The cost of that freedom was the precious blood of our savior Jesus Christ. William Tyndale offered his life so we could read about this spiritual freedom in our own language. Our founders fought and gave their lives for the freedoms we now enjoy as a nation so as we celebrate our earthly freedom this Independence Day, let’s not forget to also give thanks for our eternal liberty that we find in our Lord.

Happy Birthday America

It was not because it was proposed to establish a new nation, but because it was proposed to establish a nation on new principles, that July 4, 1776, has come to be regarded as one of the greatest days in history. Great ideas do not burst upon the world unannounced. They are reached by a gradual development over a length of time usually proportionate to their importance. This is especially true of the principles laid down in the Declaration of Independence. Three very definite propositions were set out in its preamble regarding the nature of mankind and therefore of government. These were the doctrine that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain inalienable rights , and that therefore the source of the just powers of government must be derived from the consent of the governed.

It is not so much then for the purpose of undertaking to proclaim new theories and principles that this annual celebration is maintained, but rather to reaffirm and reestablish those old theories and principles which time and the unerring logic of events have demonstrated to be sound. Amid all the clash of conflicting interests, amid all the welter of partisan politics, every American can turn for solace and consolation to the Declaration of independence and the Constitution of the United States with the assurance and confidence that those two great charters of freedom and justice remain firm and unshaken. Whatever perils appear, whatever dangers threaten, the Nation remains secure in the knowledge that the ultimate application of the law of the land will provide an adequate defense and protection. Five Virtues that Make America Great

Philanthropy: Americans give more and in greater proportion than anyone else in the world: no other country comes even close in the private production of public goods.  Nothing is more indicative of a healthy civic mindset that recognizes that the duty to help others is not discharged by paying taxes.

Volunteerism: It’s not just money that Americans donate—it’s their precious time too. More than 60 million Americans volunteer each year to help their communities and sustain countless organizations that work to address every conceivable social ill under the sun.

Faith: Not only does America remain one of the last outposts of Western civilization where people believe in God and attend religious services, it also offers the amazing spectacle of people of all faiths harmoniously cooperating—not merely coexisting. Americans convert, intermarry, and vote for people of other faiths and no one seems to mind.  The Supreme Court is made up of six Catholics and three Jews—only in America!

Tolerance: While certain voices would have you believe that America is a hotbed of racism seething with intolerance, no other nation in the history of the world has allowed minorities to go as far as in life as the US. What other country has a comparable black middle class—to say nothing of the countless African-Americans, from Barack Obama to Clarence Thomas, who have reached the highest echelons of society?

“The Sky is the Limit” Mindset: Americans ignore the apocalyptic naysaying voices of the egalitarian left and continue to believe in their heart of hearts that if they work hard and apply themselves, the sky’s limit. With 272 self-made billionaires —that’s “b” as in billions—can you blame them? source

Did you know that Congressional Democrats haven’t proposed a budget since the fiscal 2010 one was passed on April 3, 2009.

That’s 27 straight months without a budget proposal from a Democrat in either the House or the Senate, And yet they continue to blame the GOP for the fiscal mess we now find our country in. The first and foremost responsibility of congress is to ENACT a budget each year. It is now 2 years and there is still no budget. The GOP house has passed a budget for 2012 but the DEMS who control the SENATE refuse to vote for it or offer an alternative.

All this talk about raising the debt ceiling is mute since the congress failed in its primary duties to pass a budget. How is anyone supposed to know how much money the government really needs if there is no PROPOSED BUDGET. I say let the government shut down until after the 2012 elections. Think about how much money the US TAXPAYERS will save if all them spend-a-holics where to leave town for a few months. Can you spell R-E-L-I-E-F? Now that sounds like one Government action that would actually be for the Common welfare of the people.
