Sowing and Reaping

If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.

If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.

If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.

If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment. If you plant consideration, you will reap success.

If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.

If you plant faith in God, you will reap a harvest.

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.

Make no mistake about this: You can never make a fool out of God. Whatever you plant is what you’ll harvest. 8 If you plant in {the soil of} your corrupt nature, you will harvest destruction. But if you plant in {the soil of} your spiritual nature, you will harvest everlasting life. Gal 6:7-8 (GW)

As commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first president of the United States, George Washington played an indispensable role in achieving American independence and safeguarding the infant republic. Risking his reputation, wealth, and life, he commanded an undermanned and poorly supplied army to a victory over the world’s leading economic and military power. As president, he kept the new nation from crashing on the shoals of anarchy, monarchy, or revolution.

The American Moses

But he longed to return to his beloved Mount Vernon. In September 1796 he published his “Farewell Address” in a Philadelphia newspaper to make clear he would not consider a third term and to offer his prescription for how best to preserve the fragile republic. To prevent their nation from unraveling or being conquered by England, France, or Spain (which still laid claim to land in North America), he warned, Americans must avoid political factions and entangling alliances.

As we race toward another election and we consider our votes for the next occupant of the White House perhaps it would do us all well to travel back in time and remember the virtues that made this country great.Avoid political factions and entangling alliances sounds like good advice to me. Perhaps our current bunch of political leaders would do well to heed the words of America’s founding father George Washington.

Washington went on to say that popular government depended on virtuous citizens and that only religion, which in the American context meant Christianity, could inspire such selfless behavior.

He frequently asserted that religion helped promote virtue, order, and social stability, and praised the efforts of churches to make people “sober, honest, and good Citizens, and the obedient subjects of a lawful government.”

Sailing or Just Drifting?

Pressure Purifies and Perfects

The gem cannot be polished without friction. Chinese proverb

A person can tell more about another’s character not by what he says, or for that matter what he does during good times. The best way to test a persons character is to see what they do under pressure. When opposition arises how do they handle it? Do they remain steadfast in their positions or do they give into the pressure of the opposition and acquiesce to their demands? When challenged to take a stand do they remain upright or do they falter and sway like a sail in the wind?

Although a sail boat can be moved by a sail it takes a rudder to maintain a steady course. Being tossed about by every wind that blows is not how men or women of character are supposed to act. They should be guided by the rudder of their convictions. The true test of maturity is the ability to stand firm against the strongest adversarial wind. Standing true to what you believe, holding fast to what you profess.

Then we will no longer be little children, tossed and carried about by all kinds of teachings that change like the wind. We will no longer be influenced by people who use cunning and clever strategies to lead us astray. Ephesians 4:14 (GW)

See You at the Pole

In April 1990, a group of Christian teenagers in Burleson, Texas, decided to pray around the flagpoles at three schools. Thanks to word-of-mouth publicity and announcements at youth rallies, that September about 45,000 students prayed around flagpoles at 1,200 schools in four states.

See You at the Pole (SYATP) is now an annual, international event. Students of all ages organize prayer gatherings outside of regular school hours, usually at 7 a.m. local time. Many parents, teachers and youth pastors join in. This years event occurs on Wednesday September 24.

Student-led prayer, even at public schools, is free speech protected by the U.S. Constitution. By gathering around their flagpoles, young people take a stand for Christ as they call on his name in prayer.

It all started for Samuel when he made a connection with God at an early age. And he chose to continue to connect with Him daily throughout his life. It’s tough being a Christian student today! You have to make a lot of choices about who you are—and who you’re not. You have to try and follow God in a world that misunderstands Christianity and tolerates its principles less and less all the time. What if, like Samuel you:—made a connection with God as a young person?
—declared,
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”?
—never let any of God’s words “fall to the ground” in your own life?

See You at the Pole™ is a great place to connect with God, connect with other believers, and connect with your campus in the name of Christ.
SYATP connects believers together at the beginning of the school year, so you can stand strong together throughout the year.

See You at the Pole™ is all about prayer. It’s about you coming together and laying aside all the labels and groups for one day, to simply connect with God in prayer and connect with fellow Christians in unity around the flag pole—whether jocks, preps, geeks, Methodists, Baptists, Catholics, sophomores, or seniors. So are you ready to connect? Are you ready to say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening?Join your generationWednesday, September 24, at 7 a.m., GATHER at your school flagpole. PRAY for your school, friends, families, and world. CONNECT. Listen as He speaks to you.

September 11 A Time to Remember

remem5c.tif (800x384 pixels)
Let us never forget the
high price of hatred!

Let us never forget
what the face of evil looks like!

Let us never forget to pray for
our enemies and forgive those who
trespassed against us!

And let us never forget to thank God
for His love and protection over us!

See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all. 1 Thess 5:15 (ASV)

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, the taking of life, broken faith between the married, unclean desires of the flesh, taking of property, false witness, bitter words: Matt 15:19 (BBE)
