Gone Fishing

Hwk008

John 21:2-3 (ASV) 2 There was together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and entered into the boat; and that night they took nothing.

Spring is my time of year. I absolutely love it. I love the freshness in the air after a late afternoon spring shower. The cool evening breezes blowing through the open windows of my apartment gives everything that springtime freshness. It is a time for fishing, hiking, bicycle riding, a late day stroll or anything else you can do in the great outdoors.

After being cooped up all winter springtime arrives with a welcoming offer to come outside Swing2cand play. Backyards are full of children laughing, parents pruning and mowers humming as the smell of fresh cut grass fills the air. At last spring has arrived.

Students have difficulty focusing on their studies as the springtime sunshine beckons them to adjourn to the outdoors. Teachers also fight the temptation to take the class on a road trip. Those of us who must work for a living fight the urge to play hookie and head for the lake for a day of fishing.

Such must have been the feelings of Peter and some of the disciples. Jesus had just recently been crucified and appeared unto them as risen.

He had appeared to them on two prior occasions while they were hiding from fear of the Jews. In spite of His appearances things were different now.

The disciples where at a lose for what to do without Jesus leading them around each day. So Simon Peter being a fisherman by trade decided to go fishing. Five other disciples decided to go along with him.

Tip340Despite the fact that Peter was a fisherman they fished all night and caught nothing. That sounds a great deal like my fishing experiences. I have gone on several occasions only to come away with nothing to show for it but mosquito bites and a cold. I never did manage to catch anything on any of my so called fishing expeditions. I can certainly identify with their lack of a catch.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. NIV Eph 4:29

Since initially writing this post as predicted another celeb has fallen by offending via the mouth. Don Imus of Imus in the morning is the latest casualty in this war against moral decency. However as the rest of this article states, the focus of our attention on symptoms rather than the cause of such offenses is not a cure. Advocates of speech censorship seem to deal out justice rather unjustly. There are those who have offended far worse than Don Imus or Michael Richards yet they continue to invent ways to offend even more people with things they say and opinions they espouse. So posted for a second go round is the following:

Michael Richards Says He’s ‘Shattered’ by Comments Made at Comedy Club

Michael Richards

Once again a comedian gets heckled at a comedy club and resorts to name calling and profanity. Not since the last “RAP STAR” produced a filth infested, profanity infused, expletive not deleted rap song has the public been subjected to entertainers with sewers where their mouths ought to be. It would seem “musical artists” are exempt from cries of racism or vulgarity. We seen to look the other way under certain circumstances only to rise up and feign indignation at others. Personally I feel, for the most part, our society has been breeding this crude behavior and encouraging its continued uprising by not insisting on a higher standard in society. Records are sold by the millions with lyrics that would have made our great grandmothers winch in disgust as they ran for the soap to wash those entertainers mouths out.

Perhaps we all could use a good old fashioned mouth wash with our propensity to spew profanities and racist comments in the public square. Michael Richards is not the first and probably will not be the last to offend with words. Perhaps it is time to aim a little higher and attempt to use our words for that which blesses and uplifts, rather than tearing down and demeaning others. The bible teaches very clearly that our communication should be that which uplifts and raises society to higher levels not take it down the fast track to the depths of depravity.

Jesus Christ is not a swear word and God’s last name is not Dammit, only ignorant, unlearned people, those who have not been redeemed from the depravity of mankind, should be guilty of such profane communications. God sent His Son Jesus into this world to redeem mankind from such filth and depravity. Why than should our society put up with, and purchase such profane products? Unless of course we find such depravity entertaining. I for one find it debase and devoid of entertainment value and those who exercise such verbal filth are to be pitied and prayed for not applauded and paid.

A Biblical Perspective on Global Warming

clipped from www.amazines.com

Neither God nor the Bible holds any political position right or left. As it pertains to what is really polluting the earth the Bible says it is what we are allowing in our souls and not what we are allowing into the air that will cause our ultimate demise. “…and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.” Jer 3:2

Is global warming a concern that the church should undertake as its own cause? Let’s see.
It must be said that Gore’s inconvenient truth conveniently ignores the fact that the world does not end because of rising global temperatures. In fact the world does not end at all but is restructured at the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Pumping hydrocarbons into the air causes more concern than the filth and trash we pump into the minds of our young everyday through media, educational claptrap and indifference.
Keeping the planet clean is important but it is the least of the priorities when we consider that the earth will someday be removed.

Before You

By William Arthur Ward

Before you speak, listen.
Before you write, think.
Before you spend, earn.
Before you invest, investigate.
Before you criticize, wait.
Before you pray, forgive.
Before you quit, try.
Before you retire, save.
Before you die, give.
